Verdict: legit, read the price firstIs Agoda Legit?
Short version: yes. Agoda has been owned by Booking Holdings since 2007 — the same parent company as Booking.com, Priceline and Kayak. Its reviews are unusually split, and once you know why, the platform is easy to use safely.
The short answer
Yes, Agoda is legitimate. It was founded in 2005, is headquartered in Singapore, and has been owned by Booking Holdings — the same company that owns Booking.com, Priceline, Kayak and OpenTable — since 2007. Your payment goes to a real, regulated business.
Its public reviews look alarming until you read the split. Agoda holds 2.7 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 52,153 reviews, but that average hides a polarised distribution: 51% give it five stars and 34% give it one. Almost nobody sits in the middle. The five-star half booked a cheap room in Asia and it worked. The one-star third hit a refund, a surprise tax line or a support queue.
Agoda is a marketplace, not a hotel chain. It does not own the properties it lists or set their cancellation terms. Know that, check the total price before you pay, and it is a strong platform — particularly across Asia-Pacific.

Why it is trustworthy
The trust signals
These are the things that are genuinely verifiable about the company, rather than about any one hotel listed on it.
A Booking Holdings company
Acquired in 2007 by what is now Booking Holdings, a publicly traded group that also owns Booking.com, Priceline, Kayak and OpenTable.
Twenty years of trading
Founded in 2005 by Michael Kenny and Robert Rosenstein. A two-decade operating history is not something a scam sustains.
Real Asia-Pacific depth
Its original market was Southeast Asia and it still lists small guesthouses across Thailand, Vietnam, Japan and Indonesia that Western platforms miss.
Payment stays on-platform
You pay through Agoda’s own checkout. No legitimate booking will ever ask you to wire money to a property directly.
Reviews from verified stays
Property scores on Agoda come from guests who booked and stayed through it, which is harder to game than an open review site.
Agoda VIP and AgodaCash
A free tiered programme unlocking discounts of up to 25% on marked listings, plus credit you can spend on later bookings.
The honest balance
Agoda pros & cons
What is good
- Frequently the cheapest headline rate in Asia, often beating Booking.com on the same room
- Unmatched coverage of small Asian hotels, hostels and guesthouses
- Agoda VIP discounts stack automatically once you have a couple of bookings
- AgodaCash credit and PointsMAX, which converts a booking into airline miles instead of a discount
- Free cancellation available on a large share of rooms, filterable in search
- Half of all Trustpilot reviewers rate it five stars — the good experience is genuinely common
What to watch
- Search results can show the rate before taxes and fees, so the checkout total jumps
- Currency conversion at checkout is rarely the best rate available to you
- Refund terms are set by each property, not by Agoda
- Non-refundable rates are the default on many of the cheapest listings
- Customer support is the single most common complaint in one-star reviews
- Coverage outside Asia is thinner than Booking.com’s

Is Agoda safe? The real risks, and how to avoid each one
The platform is legitimate. The risk is specific, and every one of these has a simple countermeasure that costs you nothing.
Compare the total, not the headline rate
This is the complaint behind more one-star Agoda reviews than any other. Depending on your country and settings, search results may show a room rate that excludes taxes and property fees. Click through to the payment page and read the final total before you compare it with anywhere else. The room that looked cheapest sometimes is not.
Pay in the property’s local currency
If Agoda offers to charge you in your home currency, that is dynamic currency conversion and the exchange rate is set by the payment processor, not your bank. Choosing the local currency and letting your card do the conversion is almost always cheaper. Switch the currency selector before you reach checkout.
Read the cancellation policy on the rate, not the hotel
Two rooms in the same property can have completely different terms, and Agoda’s cheapest listings are frequently non-refundable. The cancellation date is printed on each individual rate. If the gap between refundable and non-refundable is small, take the refundable one.
Never pay a property outside Agoda
Agoda will not ask you to pay by bank transfer, WhatsApp or a link sent by email. Messages that do are phishing, usually sent from a compromised property account. Pay through the Agoda checkout with a credit card so you keep a chargeback route.
Confirm the booking directly with the hotel
A short email to the property a few days before arrival, using contact details you found yourself, catches an overbooking or a missing reservation while you can still fix it — rather than in the lobby at midnight. This is the single most useful item on this list.
Read the lowest reviews, not the average
An 8.6 average tells you very little. Sort a property’s reviews to the lowest scores and look for a repeated complaint: noise, cleanliness, a mandatory resort fee on arrival. One angry review is noise; the same complaint five times is a fact about the hotel.
The numbers
Agoda reviews: what the ratings actually say
This is the statistic that makes people ask the question in the first place, so here it is without softening.
out of 5, from 52,153 reviews. Rated “Poor” overall — but see the split below.
of reviewers give Agoda the top score. Only 1% choose the middle rating of three.
by Booking Holdings, the publicly traded group behind Booking.com, Priceline and Kayak.
How the 52,153 Trustpilot reviews break down
Source: Trustpilot, www.agoda.com, checked 16 September 2026. Percentages are rounded by Trustpilot and total 100%.
That shape matters more than the 2.7. A normal company’s reviews cluster around a middle. Agoda’s do the opposite: 63% sit at five or four stars, 36% sit at one or two, and just 1% land in the middle. There is essentially no such thing as a mildly disappointing Agoda booking.
The reason is that Agoda is cheap and transactional. When nothing goes wrong — which is most of the time — you get a lower rate than you would elsewhere and you never speak to anyone, so you rate it five. When something does go wrong, the thing that breaks is the part Agoda handles directly: a refund, a charge you did not expect, or a support reply that takes days. Then you rate it one.
So the honest reading is not “Agoda is bad”. It is that Agoda is excellent when the booking is simple and frustrating when it needs human intervention. That is exactly why the six checks in the section above are worth two minutes: they are the difference between the 51% and the 34%.
Head to head
Agoda vs Booking.com: which should you use?
They share a parent company, so this is not a question of which one is real. It is a question of where each one is stronger.
| Agoda | Booking.com | |
|---|---|---|
| Owner | Booking Holdings | Booking Holdings |
| Strongest region | Asia-Pacific | Europe and worldwide |
| Typical price in Asia | Often the lower headline rate | Competitive, occasionally cheaper |
| Price display | May exclude taxes and fees until checkout | Usually shows the total earlier |
| Loyalty discount | Agoda VIP, up to 25% on marked rates | Genius, 10–20% on participating rates |
| Pay at property | On some rates | Very widely available |
| Trustpilot score | 2.7 out of 5 (52,153 reviews) | 1.5 out of 5 (126,594 reviews) |
| Best for | Cheap stays in Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, Indonesia | Europe, the Americas, and pay-on-arrival flexibility |
The short version: use Agoda for Asia and Booking.com almost everywhere else, and check both for any trip that matters. Because they share an owner, you are not trading safety for price — only convenience and coverage.
Getting the price down
What is Agoda VIP, and is it worth it?
Agoda VIP is free, automatic and the main reason regular users stay on the platform. Tiers are earned by completed bookings over a rolling 24 months, and you must keep your cancellation rate low.
Unlocks after 2 bookings in 24 months.
Unlocks after 5 bookings in 24 months.
Unlocks after 10 bookings in 24 months.
The discounts apply only to listings marked as VIP-eligible, and they come off automatically at checkout rather than needing a code. Alongside it, AgodaCash is credit earned on some bookings that you spend against a later one, and PointsMAX lets you take airline miles with a partner programme instead of a discount on that booking. PointsMAX is worth checking if you are close to an award redemption; otherwise the straight discount is usually better value.
One caveat worth knowing before you chase a tier: cancelling too often can hold you back, because tier progress depends on completed stays rather than bookings made.
Where it wins
What Agoda is genuinely best at
Asia, by a wide margin
Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines. It lists small properties that never surface on Western-first platforms.
The lowest headline rate
On the same room in Asia it frequently undercuts the alternatives — provided you compare the final total, not the first number.
Rewards that compound
VIP tiers, AgodaCash and promo codes stack in a way that rewards using one platform repeatedly.
Miles instead of discount
PointsMAX turns a hotel night into airline miles, which is unusual among online travel agencies.
Straight answers
The questions people actually ask
Why is the Trustpilot score only 2.7 if Agoda is legitimate?
Because the score is an average of two very different experiences. 51% of reviewers give five stars and 34% give one, with almost nobody in between. The five-star half booked a cheap room and it worked; the one-star third needed a refund or support. The average describes neither group well.
Why was my Agoda charge higher than the price I saw?
Almost always one of two things: the search result showed the rate before taxes and property fees, or the payment was converted into your home currency at the processor’s rate. Check the total on the payment page and switch the currency selector to the property’s local currency before paying.
What do I do if the property has no record of my booking?
Contact Agoda through the booking itself while you are still at the property, not afterwards. Agoda’s stated policy is to find comparable accommodation or refund the difference, but it needs to hear about it at the time. Emailing the hotel a few days before arrival usually prevents this entirely.
Ready to book a room?
Filter for free cancellation, read the total on the payment page, pay in local currency by card. Do those three things and Agoda is one of the best-value ways to book a hotel in Asia.
FAQs
Is Agoda legit? FAQs
Is Agoda legit?
Yes. Agoda is a legitimate online travel agency founded in 2005 and headquartered in Singapore, and it has been owned by Booking Holdings since 2007 — the same publicly traded group that owns Booking.com, Priceline and Kayak. It is a marketplace rather than a hotel chain, so the quality of any individual stay depends on the property you choose rather than on Agoda itself.
Is Agoda safe to pay with?
Yes, provided you pay through the Agoda checkout and never by bank transfer to a property. Use a credit card so you keep a chargeback route, and choose the property’s local currency rather than your own to avoid a poor conversion rate. Agoda will never contact you asking for payment through WhatsApp, email or an external link, and any message that does is a phishing attempt.
Why does Agoda have such bad reviews?
Agoda holds 2.7 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 52,153 reviews, but the distribution is polarised rather than simply bad: 51% award five stars and 34% award one, with only 1% in the middle. Most one-star reviews concern refunds, unexpected charges and slow customer support rather than fake listings. The score reflects how disputes are handled, not whether the company is real.
Is Agoda a scam?
No. Agoda is a genuine company with a twenty-year trading history and a publicly traded parent. Scams that use the Agoda name are run by third parties, usually by compromising a property’s account and messaging guests to pay outside the platform. The platform itself is not the scam, and paying only through the Agoda checkout avoids this entirely.
Why was my Agoda booking more expensive than the price shown?
Agoda search results can display the room rate before taxes and property fees, so the total on the payment page is higher than the first figure you saw. The other common cause is dynamic currency conversion, where Agoda charges you in your home currency at the payment processor’s exchange rate. Compare the final total and select the property’s local currency before paying.
Does Agoda give refunds?
Agoda applies the cancellation policy set by each individual property, so refunds depend on the rate you booked rather than on Agoda. Rooms marked free cancellation are refunded in full up to the stated date. Many of Agoda’s cheapest listings are non-refundable and are not refunded even if your plans change, so check the terms printed on the specific rate before paying.
What is Agoda VIP?
Agoda VIP is the free loyalty programme. VIP Silver unlocks after 2 bookings in 24 months and gives up to 12% off eligible listings, VIP Gold after 5 bookings gives up to 18%, and VIP Platinum after 10 bookings gives up to 25%. Discounts apply automatically at checkout on listings marked as VIP-eligible, and keeping your cancellation rate low is required to progress.
Is Agoda cheaper than Booking.com?
In Asia, Agoda frequently shows a lower headline rate on the same room, and Agoda VIP discounts widen the gap. Outside Asia, Booking.com usually has deeper coverage and more pay-at-property options. Because both are owned by Booking Holdings, checking each one costs you nothing in safety — compare the final total including taxes rather than the first price displayed.
